Project Bridge. Manifesta8
Willie Doherty considers doing a video that will be recorded in the city of Murcia. During a previous visit in October 2009, the artist identified a small bridge near the "Cuartel de Artillería" (Artillery barracks) that could be used as the starting point of his work, it was about the "Purísima" Bridge.
"Even as a visitor of the city, I detected a degree of tension around this bridge and how people behaved in this area. The space under and around the bridge is isolated and offers different types of stages for those who cross the bridge or those who spend time there. I am interested in exploring some of the latent tensions and the potential interaction between different local users".
On his second visit of research the artist realizes an analysis of the space to identify issues that may be developed in the script work.
The video will be recorded in one day and one night and will concentrate on the physical structure of the bridge and the river "Segura". The camera will be placed on the water surface and on the architecture of the bridge and will explore some of the evidence of human activity in the space, such as graffiti or rubbish on the ground.
Furthermore, the presence of a number of actors will create other levels of intervention in this space with the intention of exploring a range of potential topics on immigration, racism and finance through a series of verbal and nonverbal exchanges. The actions and words of the actors will be created from the information and conversations that arise in the course of this research visit.
The intention is to create a work that takes into account the location itself at the same time a story is told to raise both real and fictional version of the lives of some of the people who make the journey through the light and the shadow of the bridge structure during the day and night.
The work will be produced with a number of key individuals who live in Murcia. The work will be produced in Spanish with English subtitles.
The installation will consist on two screens that will be installed at the "Antiguo Edificio Correos" (Former Post Office Building) in Murcia.
