Amnesialand, 2010
Amnesialand is a documentary-fiction which questions our ideas of imagery, memory and history. The mining industry of Murcia has left behind a Mars-like landscape, complete with large deposits of toxic waste. It has also left behind a rich photographic archive. A selection of images from this archive, reflecting the eclectic nature of photographic production, is presented as a slide-show alongside the bleak film, as captured by Stefanos Tsivoplous.
Stefanos Tsivopoulos
1973, Prague. Lives and works in Amsterdam and Athens. The video-based work of Stefanos Tsivopoulos has consistently explored the relationship between reality and its representation, investigating what separates fact from fiction, the authentic from the scripted, the staged from the improvised. His most recent work conjures up forgotten histories to show how memory is shaped by mediated reality. In these works, Tsivopoulos examines the form as well as the veracity of image, pinpointing how history is reflected through contemporary frames of reference and subjective points of view. Tsivopoulos' work has been widely exhibited, including at the 1st Athens Biennale, 1st Thessaloniki Biennale, II International Moscow Biennale, Friedericianum in Kassel, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Witte de With in Rotterdam, BFI Southbank in London, ev+a Limerick, Heidelberg Kunstverein, Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens and Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade.
